Co-teaching activity

Who's the murderer?

The main purpose of the session is that students practice the use of questions in simple past using the auxiliary verb “did” and “W” questions. To ensure learners have fun while they are using English, the whole activity is based on a game consisting in solving a crime. To do so, they will have to put themselves in the shoes of different characters (the suspects) to ask and answer a wide range of questions to other classmates to find out who is the murderer of the Queen of Denmark.

It is well worth noting, that apart from practicing oral communication skills, the activity involves also two other areas of knowledge: Maths and Science. On one hand, students are asked to organize and select information, make connections, and discard possibilities to reach the solution of a certain problem. On the other hand, the suspects of the crime are cultural icons from 10 different countries that students have already studied for a Science project: Spain, Venezuela, Ghana, Japan, Denmark, Brazil, South Africa, Switzerland, Germany and Cameroun.

Here you can find the description of the co-teaching activity I implemented with my partner, Durga, with 6th and 5th graders from two different schools: School A and School B, respectively.

A2 CEFR level. Students can deal with simple, straightforward information and begin to express themselves in familiar contexts. They can take part in a routine conversation on simple predictable topic and understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). They are able to  communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
